Re-crossed

The Tricross has had a transformation back to how it should be. Peeved after attempting to copy MASH, where I aborted after previewing what is essentially a wanky scene designed for poseurs who are more into the image than the ride, I dragged out the 'cross tyres and mounted those babies. Josh caught wind of the impending mods, and being the tinkerer that he is, was soon digging out a set of cantis from his box of mystery, citing "ya gotta keep it authentic" as a reason to sacrifice the braking power of V-brakes for a more traditional set-up.
Of course he's right, and the knobbies don't roll fast enough on my commute to warrant needing any brakes anyway! Now, to get it off-road again...

I've got a 2008 Tricross Double Comp. It came with Avid Shorty 4 cantis. They are hopeless. I replaced them with Shimano BR550s and now there is some real stopping power and the Shimano parts are very well finished.

I see Specialized have spec'd Tektro v-brakes on all Tricross models for 2009.

How good is a Singlecross for dirt/singletrack riding with the odd jump/juder/bump? Any comments on this?

BTW - where did you get the fork mounted cable hanger?

The cable hanger we had at the shop, it's a Tektro, shouldn't be hard to find one.

It's a fun bike to ride singletrack on, but I wouldn't want it as my primary bike for that. Jumps? Na, wouldn't risk it. I rode it at the NZSS champs in Vegas, it was 40km over all sorts of singletrack, and it was cool, but I was beaten and broken afterwards.

Bottom line, it's not a mountain bike! But it is very cool.

Thanks for answers. Sounds like a good bet for what I want - not looking to replace my MTB but a lot of the forest tracks in Chch are pretty tame and boring on the MTB after a while. However the upside is they are easy to access for a ride and after work. So the
Singlecross could make a refreshing change.

Well, there are no Singlecross's being brought in this year. So it leaves the 08 56 and 58 the only one's left. Bummer, they are a great bike.

Thanks for confirming - that is a pity. Unfortunately 56/58 would be too large for me.
